I am amazed at how many people, when they are asked what helped them overcome difficult circumstances or make it through hard times, say that their faith brought them through. Really!? I don’t think so. Faith and belief, like hope and trust are vehicles or, if you will, a means to an end. Faith must be placed on a target, on an end, on a recipient if you will. So, those who tell us how they made it through a difficulty, should more honestly disclose who they ended up putting their faith in. If you are shipwrecked on the high seas and you put your faith on the Coastguard showing up then the honest answer would be, “I put my faith on the Coastguard and they showed up!”

Many times the only reason we view situations, circumstances and resources to be lacking, is because of what we compare them to. I’m not talented enough to do something because of a “I mean… look at Pavarotti!” or “I’m not a rocket scientist!” or “Who am I, Bill Gates?” kind of attitude. Every person wants to contribute, every person searches for meaning, and every person longs to be valued. That’s because we are made that way. Teaching and reinforcement of these things can artificially inflate their importance, but they are in our basic nature and need to be validated.
